Across the UK (and globally), mobile operators are shutting down legacy 2G and 3G networks to re-farm spectrum for 4G and 5G. In the UK, industry plans have been to complete 3G switch-off by 2025, and retire 2G by 2033 at the latest—with timings varying by operator and area. Globally, the trend is accelerating: dozens of 2G/3G switch-offs have already happened and many more are scheduled as operators modernise networks.
